NYC: Eric Adams celebrates landmark approval of Willets Point Redevelopment Plan
Mayor Eric Adams has celebrated a significant victory in affordable housing and economic revitalization with the City Council’s unanimous approval of the Willets Point Phase 2 development under the Uniform Land User Review Procedure (ULURP).
This decision paves the way for the ambitious Willets Point Transformation, a collaborative endeavor first unveiled by Mayor Adams in November 2022, in partnership with the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), local leaders, and private stakeholders.
The comprehensive Willets Point Transformation aims to reshape a once-industrial landscape into a vibrant community featuring the largest 100-percent affordable housing project in four decades, encompassing over 2,500 units.
Additionally, the redevelopment plan includes more than 150,000 square feet of public open space, over 20,000 square feet of retail space, a 250-key hotel, and the city’s inaugural privately financed soccer-specific stadium, led by the New York City Football Club (NYCFC).
Mayor Adams, reflecting on this achievement, emphasized the project’s transformative impact on Queens, envisioning a new community rising from what was once dubbed the ‘Valley of Ashes’.
He highlighted the collaborative effort involving key partners, city officials, and local stakeholders whose collective vision propelled this endeavor forward.
“This is a monumental victory for Willets Point and for all New Yorkers seeking affordable housing and economic opportunities,” remarked Mayor Adams. “Today’s approval brings us closer to revitalizing a neighborhood that was once synonymous with junkyards, transforming it into a thriving hub of community life.”
The Willets Point Transformation is forecasted to generate over $6 billion in economic impact over the next three decades, providing substantial job opportunities and injecting vitality into the local economy. This initiative aligns with Mayor Adams’ strategic frameworks for economic recovery and housing, emphasizing the importance of equitable development and infrastructure investment.
Deputy Mayor Maria Torres-Springer and NYCEDC President Andrew Kimball echoed Mayor Adams’ sentiments, highlighting the collaborative efforts that have culminated in this transformative project. Councilmember Francisco Moya, a key advocate for the development, emphasized its potential to enhance community amenities and support economic growth.
Construction for the initial phase of 100-percent affordable housing is already underway, with completion expected by 2026. Subsequent phases, including the construction of the soccer-specific stadium and additional housing units, are poised to solidify Willets Point as a premier destination within the city.
The Willets Point redevelopment project emerged from the recommendations of the Willets Point Task Force, reflecting extensive community engagement and collaboration among local stakeholders and elected officials. The project’s approval represents a significant step towards addressing the city’s housing needs while revitalizing a historically industrial area.
In addition to housing, the redevelopment plan underscores a commitment to sustainability and resilience, incorporating green building standards and infrastructure upgrades to mitigate environmental impact and enhance community resilience.
The approval of the Willets Point Phase 2 development heralds a new chapter for Queens, promising a dynamic blend of affordable housing, public amenities, and sports infrastructure. With the imminent realization of this transformative vision, Willets Point is poised to emerge as a model for inclusive urban development and economic revitalization within New York City.
