Former President Donald Trump finds himself embroiled in a potentially seismic scandal, following revelations that Democratic Congressman Jamie Raskin has initiated a comprehensive investigation into allegations of Trump’s unlawful acceptance of $10 million from the Egyptian government during his 2016 presidential campaign.

The situation has escalated further, as Raskin, the lead Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, is also probing whether Trump’s allies actively suppressed an investigation into the alleged corruption. This raises the possibility of uncovering a broad and intricate conspiracy, indicating that more than just campaign finance violations could be at play.

The investigation gained momentum after The Washington Post reported that the Egyptian government withdrew $10 million in funds shortly before Trump funneled a similar amount into his campaign towards the latter part of the 2016 election. The implications of this transaction are profound, as they hint at a possible quid pro quo, especially considering Trump’s subsequent actions as president. Notably, he referred to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi as his “favorite dictator” and released military aid previously withheld due to human rights concerns.

“The Post’s report has renewed suspicion that you collected a $10 million cash bribe from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi,” wrote Raskin in a no-holds-barred letter. “This detailed news report has also triggered serious speculation that your handpicked political appointees at the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), including Attorney General William Barr, subsequently blocked efforts by career prosecutors and agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to investigate the political and financial corruption that has been described.”

Raskin’s letter leaves no stone unturned, demanding access to critical records sought by investigators and documentation from Trump detailing the origin of the campaign loan. He is also pressing to uncover whether Trump “directly or indirectly received money from the Egyptian President or government.”

Adding gravity to the allegations, Raskin highlighted the loan’s timing, noting, “The timing of the loan was especially notable because earlier that year Deutsche Bank, your long-time creditor and one of the few banks that had still been willing to extend you loans, emphatically declined your request for additional credit.”

Raskin’s pursuit of truth underscores a broader demand for accountability, stating, “Surely you would agree that the American people deserve to know whether a former president—and a current candidate for president—took an illegal campaign contribution from a brutal foreign dictator.”
