Upper East Side records third incident in three weeks
Two men were shot on Sunday afternoon on the Upper East Side, marking the third such incident in the area over the past three weeks.
The shooting occurred near a migrant shelter, raising concerns among residents and authorities alike.
Officers from the 23rd Precinct responded swiftly to the scene at East 97th Street and Third Avenue, where they discovered two 23-year-old men suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the victims was struck in the right arm and hip, while the other sustained a gunshot wound to the right knee. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) promptly transported both victims to Cornell Hospital, where they are expected to survive their injuries.
According to police reports, the assailants were seen wearing black ski masks and fled on foot, heading northbound on Third Avenue. The authorities are currently investigating the motive behind the shooting and whether it has any connection to the nearby migrant shelter or the NYCHA Washington Houses, both of which are situated across the street from each other.
The recent spate of shootings in the area has left the community on edge. With three incidents in as many weeks, residents are calling for increased security measures and swift action to address the root causes of the violence.
