New York City Mayor, Eric Adams, alongside Deputy Mayor Maria Torres-Springer and other city officials, has announced that New York City has achieved back-to-back record years in creating and connecting New Yorkers to affordable housing.

The announcement was made during a press conference, highlighting significant milestones and accomplishments in the city’s ongoing efforts to tackle the housing crisis.

In Fiscal Year 2024, New York City produced a combined total of 28,944 units of affordable and public housing. This marks another record-breaking year, following the previous fiscal year’s achievements.

The city has seen significant increases in various categories of housing, including permanently supportive housing and housing for formerly homeless New Yorkers.

The city has made notable progress in supportive housing, with over 2,100 supportive apartments produced in a single year. This is the highest number on record, providing homes for the city’s most vulnerable populations, including those exiting homelessness and survivors of domestic violence.

The CityFHEPS housing voucher program has seen back-to-back record years, helping more New Yorkers secure affordable housing. Additionally, the Housing Connect lottery program has achieved record placements, connecting even more residents to housing opportunities.

The city has invested $2 billion in capital funds to the Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) and public housing through NYCHA. This investment aims to address the $80 billion NYCHA capital deficit and improve living conditions for public housing residents.

Mayor Adams emphasized the need to address the equitable distribution of housing across all communities. He highlighted the challenges faced by single adult Black men in accessing housing and called for a change in the narrative to ensure housing is a right for everyone.

The administration has set a moonshot goal of creating 500,000 new homes over the next decade. This ambitious target aims to address the city’s housing shortage and ensure that all New Yorkers have access to safe and affordable housing.

Mayor Eric Adams stated, “We are solving the housing problem in this city. Like it or not, the record speaks for itself. We have to build more housing, and we cannot wait any longer.” Deputy Mayor Maria Torres-Springer added, “Today’s announcement is a testament to our commitment to making New York City more livable and more affordable for all. We have broken records, but more importantly, we are transforming lives.”

The announcement included testimonies from residents who have benefited from the city’s housing initiatives. Allen Pastures, a recipient of a CityFHEPS voucher, shared his story of finding stable housing after years of struggle. Ghita Walker, a resident of One Waterline Square, spoke about the positive impact of affordable housing on her life.

The city will continue to focus on building more housing, cutting red tape, and ensuring that every community contributes to solving the housing crisis. The administration remains dedicated to creating a more equitable and inclusive city where all New Yorkers have the opportunity to thrive.
