Br. Orlando Rodriguez, Sch.P. received the Ministry of Acolyte from Very Rev. Fernando Negro, Sch.P., the Piarist Provincial of the Piarist Province of the USA and Puerto Rico, at St. Helena Catholic Church, Bronx, during the 5PM Mass on Sunday, November 4. Six priests, a deacon, five seminarians and 125 faithful were present for the moving event. Br. Orlando is in his third year of theology at St. Joseph's Seminary in Yonkers. This is part of the seminary process preparing him for the priesthood. The modern Ministry of Acolyte was instituted in 1972. The acolyte is the proper server at Mass and other liturgical functions. In particular, it falls to him to carry the Cross and the Missal and to assist the priest at the altar. In addition, he is entrusted in extraordinary circumstances with the care of the Blessed Sacrament, either to expose and repose it for adoration or to assist in the distribution of the Holy Communion or taking it to the sick. He may also assist the Priest and/or Deacon in the purification of the vessels after Communion.
