In a powerful address to the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), Vice President Kamala Harris shared a compelling vision for America’s future, emphasizing the need to transcend the “politics of division and hate.”

Harris stated, “I truly believe that America is ready to turn the page on the politics of division and hate. And to do it, our nation is counting on the leadership in this room.”

Harris highlighted the CBC’s historic role in shaping a future “unburdened by what has been,” and a commitment to realizing the promise of America — “a promise of freedom, opportunity, and justice. Not just for some but for all.”

She warned of the “profound threat” posed by former President Donald Trump and his “extremist allies,” who she claims are intent on reversing progress by offering tax breaks to billionaires, cutting essential programs like Social Security and Medicare, and dismantling the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Despite these challenges, Harris was resolute: “We are not going back. We will chart a new way forward.” She articulated a vision of healthcare as a right, not a privilege, and underscored the importance of strengthening the ACA, humorously noting, “Remember, they tried to name it Obamacare thinking people wouldn’t like it. People love it.”

Harris also detailed plans for an “opportunity economy,” aiming to create 25 million new small businesses in four years and expand access to homeownership and entrepreneurial opportunities. Her vision includes safeguarding fundamental freedoms, such as the right to vote, and passing significant legislation like the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.

In advocating for reproductive rights, Harris affirmed, “We will continue to fight for the freedom of a woman to make decisions about her own body,” and promised to sign legislation restoring reproductive freedoms.

Acknowledging the “hard work ahead,” Harris expressed confidence in the collective resolve: “Hard work is good work, hard work is joyful work.” She rallied the audience to continue registering voters and emphasized the power of unity in achieving these goals: “When the CBC fights, we win.”

In closing, Harris expressed gratitude, “Thank you in advance for your work, the work you have done and will continue to do… God bless the United States of America.”

Her speech presented a hopeful vision for America’s future, grounded in unity and progress.
