Mayor Eric Adams addressed the recent investigations that have stirred public discourse, emphasizing his unwavering commitment to transparency and adherence to the law.

“My fellow New Yorkers,” he began, “earlier this week, I spoke to you about the ongoing investigations that have recently come to light. I was as surprised as you to learn of these inquiries and I take them extremely seriously.”

Drawing on his extensive law enforcement experience, Mayor Adams reiterated the dedication of his administration to legal compliance and public service.

“I spent more than 20 years in law enforcement, and so, every member of the administration knows my expectations that we must follow the law,” he stated, reassuring New Yorkers that “our administration will remain focused on delivering for the people of our great city and we continue to do that.”

A major announcement followed with the resignation of NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban.

Acknowledging Caban’s impactful tenure, Adams remarked, “I accepted the resignation of the NYPD commissioner, Edward Caban. He concluded that this is the best decision at this time. I respect his decision and I wish him well.” During Caban’s leadership, the city saw a significant decrease in crime, including the removal of over 18,000 illegal guns and record lows in subway robberies and shootings.

To continue this positive trend, Adams announced the appointment of Tom Donlon as interim police commissioner.

“To ensure crime keeps going down in our city today, I’m taking immediate action in appointing Tom Donlon as interim police commissioner,” Adams declared. Donlon, a Bronx native, brings a wealth of experience, having served at various levels of law enforcement, including as New York’s director of the Office of Homeland Security.

Donlon’s appointment is strategic, leveraging his background in high-profile investigations like the 1993 Twin Towers bombing and international terrorist attacks, to ensure ongoing safety and security for New Yorkers.

Mayor Adams concluded with a heartfelt acknowledgment of the NYPD’s officers, expressing confidence in their commitment to the city’s safety.

“As always, the men and women of the NYPD have my gratitude for their dedication and professionalism,” he affirmed. “I thank them for their command and their decision-making as we move forward and for the continued service that they deliver to all New Yorkers.”

With this new leadership, Mayor Adams is optimistic about New York City’s future, emphasizing its status as the “safest big city in the world.”
