In an escalating confrontation with New York City authorities, Staten Island Representative Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) has publicly accused the NYPD and Mayor Eric Adams of obstructing her efforts to obtain crucial data on crimes allegedly committed by migrants in proximity to taxpayer-funded shelters.

The congresswoman revealed her concerns during an exclusive interview with The Post on Wednesday, highlighting what she described as a lack of transparency from city officials.

Malliotakis initiated her request for these statistics under the Freedom of Information Law back in January. Her request explicitly sought data on the number of crimes committed “in or within a five-block radius of a City-run migrant shelter from January 1, 2023, to December 31, 2023.”

She also inquired about “how many arrestees have listed a City-run shelter as their home address and what were their top charges during this same time period.” She questioned whether the NYPD had been instructed to “track detailed records of incidents and or offenses involving migrants.”

Despite her persistent efforts, Malliotakis reported that the NYPD has consistently responded with delays, stating that the information would not be available until November 15—conveniently, ten days after the upcoming election, where immigration and border issues have become a focal point for voters.

Complicating matters is New York City’s sanctuary law, which restricts officers from inquiring about the immigration status of criminal defendants, thereby limiting the reporting of such information. This legal backdrop adds another layer of complexity to Malliotakis’s quest for transparency.
