President Barrow endorses Tangara as Commonwealth SG
Gambian President, Adama Barrow, has endorsed Dr. Mamadou Tangara, the current Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, for the position of Secretary-general.
The endorsement is coming as the organization seeks new leadership in different capacities.
According to President Barrow, Tangara is a candidate with a compelling vision and extensive diplomatic experience.
Tangara’s Profile
Dr. Mamadou Tangara’s illustrious career is a proof to his dedication to international relations, peace, and sustainable development. His journey began in academia, where he earned two Master’s degrees and a PhD in social sciences from prestigious universities in France and Belgium. This academic foundation paved the way for his role as a lecturer and later as the President and Chairman of the University Governing Council at the University of The Gambia.
Tangara’s transition to diplomacy and politics was marked by a series of high-impact roles. He first served as Gambia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2010 to 2012 and then briefly as the Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science, and Technology. His diplomatic acumen was further recognized when he was appointed as the Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 2013 to 2016, and again from 2017 to 2018. In 2018, he resumed his role as Minister for Foreign Affairs, a position he holds to this day.
Dr. Tangara’s contributions to peace and conflict prevention have earned him international recognition, including the United Nations Population Award (UNFPA) in 2019. This accolade was a nod to his courageous leadership during Gambia’s 2016 political impasse, where his efforts were instrumental in preventing conflict and promoting peacebuilding and stability in the region.
His tenure as Foreign Minister has seen Gambia achieve significant milestones, such as being elected as the President of the ECOWAS Commission, a member of the African Union Peace and Security Council till 2026, and a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council.
