Chaos at Merrick Planet Fitness suspect arrested after wild car chase, assault on police
Nassau County Police have arrested Getho Brevette of Merrick following a series of disturbances and assaults that culminated at a local Planet Fitness.
The incident on Sunday began shortly before 8 p.m. when officers were dispatched to the Planet Fitness in Merrick in response to reports of a disturbance.
As police arrived at the scene, Brevette attempted to flee, driving westbound on Merrick Road. Moments later, his erratic flight ended in a collision with another vehicle. Shockingly, Brevette did not remain at the crash site but instead returned to the Planet Fitness location.
Upon his return, officers attempted to arrest Brevette, who immediately became combative. In a bizarre turn, Brevette threw an unidentified liquid at the officers.
The confrontation escalated when he forcefully removed an officer’s body-worn camera and hurled it to the ground, shattering it. In a particularly alarming move, Brevette also made an attempt to seize an officer’s firearm.
The violent altercation with law enforcement was not Brevette’s first run-in with the police that weekend. According to authorities, Brevette had been arrested just the day before, on Saturday, July 20, in connection with a robbery at the First Baptist Church of Westbury.
He was released from custody mere hours before the chaotic events at Planet Fitness unfolded.
The series of incidents has left the Merrick community on edge, raising concerns about public safety and the adequacy of measures in place to prevent such occurrences.
Local residents expressed their shock and dismay over the situation, calling for stricter enforcement and oversight to ensure that individuals with a history of violent behavior are adequately monitored.
Nassau County Police are continuing their investigation into both the robbery and the subsequent assault on officers. Brevette now faces a litany of charges, including assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, and criminal mischief, among others.
He remains in custody as authorities work to piece together the full extent of his actions over the tumultuous weekend.
Police have urged anyone with additional information about either incident to come forward, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in maintaining public safety.
