IOC president expects spectacular Paris games
International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach expressed his anticipation for the upcoming Paris Olympics, stating that they will be a spectacular event. Taking place in the French capital, the Games will showcase several firsts, including an opening ceremony on barges along the river Seine instead of the traditional Olympic stadium.
The city’s major landmarks, such as the Eiffel Tower, will be incorporated into the competitions, which will be held in various urban areas across Paris. Notably, the Paris Olympics will also be the first to achieve gender parity, with equal numbers of men and women participating.
During the opening of the IOC session in Paris, President Bach emphasized the significance of the Games, stating, “Like billions of people around the world, we are awaiting with impatience the youngest, most inclusive, most urban, and most sustainable Games.” French President Emmanuel Macron was present at the event, further highlighting the importance of this global sporting event.
With over 10,500 athletes representing 206 national Olympic Committees, the 16-day multi-sports event will mark 100 years since the last time Paris hosted the Olympics. To ensure the safety and security of the Games, more than 30,000 security officers will be on duty.
President Bach also acknowledged the challenges faced by the IOC in a rapidly changing world order. He highlighted the decoupling of economies, the prioritization of narrow self-interests over the rule of law, and the growing divide between the “Global South” and “Global North.” Despite these challenges, he emphasized the IOC’s commitment to solidarity, fueled by increased revenues that will be distributed to national Olympic committees, international federations, and other stakeholders.
To remain relevant to the younger generation, President Bach stressed the need for the Olympic movement to adapt to the changing lifestyles of young people in the digital age. He urged the adoption of a digital mindset and engagement with the digitally native generation to ensure the continued relevance of the Olympic Games.
In an effort to connect with a younger audience, the IOC is also moving forward with the creation of Olympic Esports Games in a 12-year-deal with Saudi Arabia. This initiative aims to tap into the popularity of esports and further promote the Olympic brand.
Amidst the divisive forces tearing humanity apart, President Bach highlighted the athletes’ role in personifying our shared hope for a better future. The Paris Olympics will serve as a platform for unity and celebration, showcasing the power of sport to bring people together despite the challenges faced by the world.
