Schumer, Pelosi push Biden to step aside
Top Democrats, including Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, are increasing pressure on President Joe Biden to withdraw from his reelection campaign.
They are concerned that Biden cannot defeat Republican challenger Donald Trump, according to reports from US media.
Schumer told Biden that it would be better for the country and the Democratic Party if he ended his reelection campaign, as reported by ABC News.
Similarly, House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries expressed his concerns directly to Biden, according to a source familiar with the conversation.
It was also reported that Pelosi has informed Biden that polling data suggests he cannot defeat Trump and that his candidacy could harm the Democrats’ chances of regaining control of the House of Representatives. Pelosi spoke to Biden about this during a recent telephone call, according to sources briefed on the conversation.
However, none of the sources indicated that Pelosi explicitly told Biden to leave the race. Biden, in response, assured Pelosi that he has seen polling indicating that he can win, according to a source from CNN.
Democratic Representative Adam Schiff has also joined the calls for Biden to drop out of the race, becoming the 20th congressional Democrat to publicly express this opinion.
Schumer’s office dismissed the report about his meeting with the president, labeling it as “idle speculation.” They stated that Schumer conveyed the views of his caucus directly to President Biden on Saturday.
Despite the pressure from within his own party, Biden has repeatedly rejected calls to drop out of the race. The White House spokesperson, Andrew Bates, stated that the President has affirmed his status as the party’s nominee, plans to win, and looks forward to working with Schumer and Pelosi to pass his 100 days agenda for working families.
