NYC aging launches farmers Market nutrition program

The Department for the Aging in New York City has recently initiated its annual Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP), providing an opportunity for qualified older residents to purchase locally grown fruits and vegetables using coupons. This year, a total of 55,000 coupon booklets will be distributed across the five boroughs at 350 local organizations, an increase of 2,860 books compared to last year.

Each coupon booklet is valued at $25 and contains five coupons worth $5 each. These coupons can be redeemed at participating farmers markets, farm stands, and mobile markets, allowing older adults to access affordable and nutritious food options. The FMNP program aims to complement the meals offered at older adult centers and through the home-delivered meal program, ultimately promoting a balanced and healthy diet for older New Yorkers.

Mayor Eric Adams, a strong advocate for healthy eating, emphasized the importance of maintaining a nutritious diet for overall well-being. He stated, “Eating a healthy and balanced diet can unlock so many physical, mental, and emotional benefits. The Department for the Aging continues to make this part of its mission, and I am proud that today we are announcing even more supports to help our older adults access locally-grown fruits and vegetables.”

Commissioner Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez also expressed the Department’s commitment to promoting healthy food policies and practices. She highlighted the Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program as another opportunity for vulnerable older residents to access the necessary support for healthy eating and aging in their own communities.

To be eligible for the program, individuals must be 60 years or older, living in New York City, and meeting specific income criteria. The distribution of coupon booklets will be on a first-come, first-served basis until September 30, 2024, and coupons will be valid until November 30, 2024. Proxy or power of attorney is allowed for the purchase of food on behalf of a qualified older adult, but online purchases are not permitted.

The Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) is a federally funded initiative sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, the New York State Department of Health, the New York State Office for the Aging, Cornell Cooperative Extension, and USDA Food and Nutrition Service. The program aims to promote improved nutrition by increasing the consumption of locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables while supporting local farmers and markets.
