Gov Hochul launches New York mobile ID for enhanced security, convenience
Governor Kathy Hochul has announced the launch of the New York Mobile ID, a cutting-edge digital version of state-issued driver licenses, learner permits, and non-driver IDs.
This innovative initiative, spearheaded by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), aims to provide New Yorkers with a secure and convenient way to carry their identification on their smartphones.
The New York Mobile ID (MiD) is designed for iOS and Android users, offering a voluntary, secure digital ID that can be easily downloaded via the App Store or Google Play. This initiative not only simplifies the process of carrying and presenting identification but also enhances security by allowing users to control what personal information they share.
Governor Hochul expressed her excitement, stating, “We’re thrilled to give New Yorkers access to this cutting-edge technology which provides convenience and added security for Mobile ID users and those who accept it. Not only will New Yorkers be able to quickly display their IDs, but they will have control over the personal information they share.”
Through a partnership with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the New York MiD will be accepted at TSA security checkpoints at nearly 30 participating airports across the country, including all terminals at LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports. This allows New Yorkers to verify their identity swiftly and securely during airport security screenings.
Robert Duffy, TSA’s Federal Security Director for LaGuardia Airport, remarked, “We are pleased to be able to add this state-of-the-art digital ID to the list of acceptable IDs at our security checkpoints. Travelers who want to take advantage of this new capability will find that their New York mobile driver’s license is a convenient option when going through the security process.”
Obtaining a New York MiD is simple:
1. Download the New York MiD app from the App Store or Google Play.
2. Register your device by phone number.
3. Capture photos of your physical ID (front and back) using your phone’s camera.
4. Take a selfie for identity verification.
5. Once verified, your MiD is ready for use.
A detailed step-by-step guide is available, ensuring that all attributes of your physical ID, including organ donor status and veteran status, are reflected in your digital ID.
While the New York MiD serves as a companion to a physical ID, its acceptance is expanding. Currently, it is accepted at select TSA checkpoints and can be used at businesses and venues that opt to accept it. Businesses and organizations are encouraged to adopt this secure form of ID verification, enhancing security and customer confidence.
The New York MiD prioritizes privacy and security, encrypting personal information and allowing users to control data sharing. The app requires Face ID, Touch ID, or a PIN for access, ensuring that users’ information is secure. Moreover, the DMV can update the app with any changes to personal information, maintaining up-to-date and authentic identity verification.
