Nancy Pelosi issues stark warning on global democracy threats
Former Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, has delivered a compelling message on the critical challenges facing democracy, highlighting the menacing influence of autocratic regimes like Russia and China.
Speaking at an event in Dublin, Pelosi emphasized the urgent need to defend democratic principles against encroaching authoritarian tactics.
Pelosi’s remarks underscored the broader global struggle between autocracy and democracy, pointing directly at leaders like Vladimir Putin of Russia and the regime in China for employing brute force and economic coercion to undermine democratic values.
“Right now, democracy is at stake,” she warned, emphasizing the vulnerabilities of free elections and judicial independence.
The event, held at Deerfield Residence, the US ambassador’s residence in Phoenix Park, marked Pelosi’s acceptance of Fulbright Ireland’s inaugural Public Service Award.
The Fulbright Commission, known for its academic exchange initiatives, honored Pelosi’s exceptional contribution to public service and political life.
In a discussion with US Ambassador Claire Cronin, Pelosi commended the recent passing of a critical military aid bill by the US House of Representatives, allocating support to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. She hailed this move as essential in safeguarding democracy and expressed admiration for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
Among the attendees were former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and Pelosi’s husband, Paul Pelosi. Pelosi also shared insights into her political career, including her views on past US presidents. She praised Joe Biden for his empathy and experience, while subtly critiquing former President Donald J. Trump.
Earlier in the day, Pelosi met with President Michael D Higgins at Arás an Uachtaráin, reinforcing the significance of transatlantic relations in preserving democratic values amid global challenges.
