Trump advocates state control over abortion laws, avoids backing federal restrictions
Former President Donald Trump has refrained from endorsing a federal abortion ban on Monday, emphasizing that states should have the autonomy to regulate the issue, despite calls from anti-abortion groups urging him to support a nationwide restriction.
Trump’s stance on abortion has been ambiguous for months, as he grapples with competing pressures from both Republicans and Democrats. While some within his party advocate for federal regulations, Trump has voiced concerns about the electoral consequences and has taken credit for the Supreme Court decision that overturned the constitutional right to abortion.
President Biden and Democrats have positioned abortion rights as a pivotal issue in the upcoming elections.
In a video released on Truth Social, Trump stated, “Now that abortion is legally settled, states should decide through voting or legislation, and their decisions must be respected.” He emphasized the importance of individual conscience, religion, and faith in shaping one’s stance on abortion, without committing to enacting exceptions into law.
Despite expressing support for exceptions in cases of rape, incest, and maternal life, Trump perpetuated misinformation by accusing Democrats of radicalism on the issue, including false claims about support for post-birth “execution.” He also affirmed his backing for in vitro fertilization (IVF) for couples struggling with fertility.
Last week, Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America praised Trump’s pro-life legacy but urged him to endorse a 15-week nationwide abortion ban, expressing disappointment with his state-centric approach. Trump’s criticism extends to fellow Republicans, condemning Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ six-week abortion ban and admonishing GOP candidates for mishandling the abortion discourse in recent elections.
While Trump hinted at support for a 15-week national abortion ban in a March radio interview, he primarily celebrates the overturning of Roe v. Wade as a cornerstone achievement of his administration. The 2022 Supreme Court ruling effectively decentralized abortion policy, granting states immediate authority to impose restrictions.
