Hotel union calls for boost in unemployment benefits in New York State budget

The influential hotel trades union is rolling out an advertising campaign to urge Governor Kathy Hochul and the state legislature to enhance unemployment insurance benefits.

According to the 30-second television ad reviewed by Spectrum News NY1 from the Hotel Gaming Trades Council, “New York hasn’t increased benefits in five years, and union workers on strike have to wait nearly a month before receiving the benefits they deserve. It’s time to fix unemployment insurance.”

As negotiations for New York’s multi-billion dollar state budget financial plan continue, union leaders remain optimistic. The state Senate has proposed reducing the waiting period for striking workers to receive unemployment benefits from two weeks to one week in their “one house budget proposal.” Additionally, the Assembly has shown support for increases in their separate “one house budget” plan.

The six-figure ad buy is scheduled to launch on Monday and will be featured on television, digital platforms, and social media, aiming to garner support for the cause.
