A massive migrant caravan, consisting of up to 8,000 individuals from Venezuela, Cuba, and Mexico, is advancing through Mexico towards the United States border under the banner “Poverty Exodus.”

The caravan, comprising people of all ages, coincides with the imminent visit of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to Mexico City, where he aims to negotiate new agreements to manage migration.

The surge in migration is underlined by the alarming statistics of over two million apprehensions at the US southern border in both the 2022 and 2023 fiscal years. In September 2023 alone, US Border Patrol reported over 200,000 migrants crossing the border unlawfully.

Departing from Tapachula, near the southern border with Guatemala, this Christmas Eve caravan includes individuals fleeing various challenges, such as a Honduran migrant named Jose Santos, who sought refuge from a threatening criminal gang.

Reflecting the complexity of the situation, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador expressed readiness to collaborate with the US on migration concerns. As President Obrador prepares to meet Secretary Blinken, the White House highlights discussions on “unprecedented irregular migration” and strategies to address shared border security challenges.
