Bronx man found dead in apartment, fatal beating suspected
A Bronx man was found dead in his NYCHA apartment, and investigators suspect he was fatally beaten, police said Sunday.
Police responding to a 911 call of an assault in progress found the 37-year-old man lifeless in his apartment in the Adams Houses on E. 152nd St. near Concord Ave. in Melrose about 12:40 p.m. on Saturday.
He had trauma to his head and body, and investigators believe he was beaten to death, though the city’s medical examiner has yet to determine the official cause of his demise.
Cops have classified his death a homicide, but no arrests have been made. His name was not immediately released.
The victim’s neighbors said the victim often fought with his live-in boyfriend.
“Maybe every other month,” neighbor Crystal Rivera, 31, said of their fights. “At one point [it] started to get really really bad. I think they got into a really bad dispute. Looked like the [partner] was miserable.”
Rivera said she couldn’t speculate on who killed the victim.
“He had a lot of [people] in and out of his crib. There was a guy who had keys to his house,” Rivera said. She heard someone banging on the victim’s door one day last week, but didn’t know what it was all about.
She heard no commotion the day of the killing, though.
“I’m in shock. No banging, no stuff getting thrown,” she said. “I’m spooked. It’s really sad.”
The victim suffered from diabetes and received disability assistance, Rivera said.
“He was really nice, help anybody,” she said. “Clean up the building. He was resourceful. Good community man.”
