The African Union Commission has issued a firm rebuke of reports suggesting that Israel intends to appoint a diplomatic envoy to Somaliland, warning that such a step could undermine regional peace and violate established international norms.

In a statement released on April 19, 2026, from Addis Ababa, the Commission said it “strongly condemns” the reported decision, describing it as inconsistent with the African Union’s long-held position on the territorial integrity of Somalia.

“The African Union Commission expresses deep concern and strongly condemns reports of Israel’s decision to appoint a diplomatic envoy to the so-called ‘Somaliland,’” the Commission stated.

Reaffirming its stance, the AU emphasized that Somaliland is not recognized as an independent state under its framework or international law, stressing its commitment to preserving Somalia’s unity.

“The Commission reaffirms the African Union’s unwavering respect for the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of Somalia… The Union does not recognize Somaliland as an independent state,” it added.

Referencing the communiqué of its Peace and Security Council’s 1324th meeting held in January 2026, the Commission cautioned that any unilateral recognition of Somaliland would be deemed invalid and could trigger broader instability.

“The Commission underscores that any unilateral recognition of Somaliland is null and void and warns that such actions risk undermining regional stability,” the statement noted.

The AU concluded by restating its commitment to advancing peace, governance, and national cohesion in Somalia, amid ongoing geopolitical sensitivities in the Horn of Africa.
