Ukraine has received its first-ever shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States, marking a pivotal moment in its energy independence from Russia. The delivery, amounting to approximately 100 million cubic meters, was announced by Ukrainian energy company DTEK on Friday, December 27th.

The LNG was initially offloaded at a terminal in Greece before being transported via pipeline to Ukraine, signaling strengthened U.S.-Ukraine energy ties. This development comes as Ukraine’s 5-year contract for Russian natural gas transit nears its expiration and amid ongoing Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, which have increased the country’s reliance on European electricity imports.

Oksana Markarova, Ukraine’s ambassador to the U.S., celebrated the shipment in a post on X: “First LNG from Louisiana via Greece is already in Ukraine! Great cooperation of US & UA businesses makes Europe stronger and safer. We need more US gas in Ukraine and Europe and complete refusal of all free countries from bloody and dirty Russian gas which funds murders.”

The shipment aligns with U.S. efforts under President-elect Donald Trump to increase American energy exports to Europe. Analysts suggest direct LNG supplies from the U.S. could ease pressure on the European gas market, potentially reducing dependency on Russian energy and reshaping regional energy dynamics.
