Oman has announced plans for a metro system, with the project now in its final decision-making stage, Minister of Housing and Urban Planning Dr. Khalfan Al Shueili announced.
Speaking to journalists in Muscat on Wednesday, Dr. Al Shueili revealed that the metro, a key component of the nation’s spatial strategy, is expected to be operational between 2030 and 2032, contingent on government actions and market conditions.
“We aim to deliver this around 2030 to 2032,” Dr. Al Shueili stated, highlighting the metro’s potential to transform Oman’s transportation infrastructure. “This project is not just about improving mobility; it’s about enhancing the quality of life for our citizens and creating a more connected urban environment.”
The minister emphasized the importance of careful planning and collaboration with international partners. “The metro project will require extensive cooperation with global vendors and investors. We are currently in discussions with several potential partners to ensure we have the best expertise and resources on board,” he said.
In addition to the metro, Dr. Al Shueili outlined other transformative initiatives aimed at driving urban development and attracting foreign investment. “We are committed to making Oman an attractive destination for global investors,” he said. “Our Integrated Tourism Complex (ITC) and Future Cities initiative are designed to offer world-class living and investment opportunities.”
The Future Cities initiative features several ambitious projects, including Sultan Haitham City, A’ Thuraya City, Salalah Future City, and a new investment city in Al Jabal Al Akhdar. “These cities are designed to be sustainable, smart, and inclusive,” Dr. Al Shueili noted. “They will offer state-of-the-art facilities and freehold ownership opportunities to expatriates and foreign investors.”
Highlighting the positive impact of these initiatives, he added, “We have already seen a strong response from the expat community, both in Oman and abroad. International companies are increasingly recognizing Oman as a prime investment destination.”
The Integrated Housing Complexes program, which includes 12 properties under development, also aims to boost the real estate market. “This program offers freehold ownership, making it easier for expatriates to invest in Oman’s growing property market,” Dr. Al Shueili explained.
Expressing optimism about the future, Dr. Al Shueili said, “We are confident that these projects will stimulate economic growth, diversify our economy, and position Oman as a leader in urban development in the region.”
