In an impassioned plea, Parkchester resident Tatyana Karpman has called on decision-makers to halt plans to demolish the parking garage at 2040 East Tremont Avenue, warning that its removal would severely disrupt the lives of tenants in the area.

“Parkchester tenants rely on this garage,” Karpman wrote in her letter addressed “To Whom It May Concern.” She emphasized that the garage serves as an essential resource for an already congested neighborhood struggling with limited parking options.

“Street parking in this area is already scarce and chaotic. The garage provides much-needed organization and relief in a neighborhood that is already highly congested,” Karpman explained. “Eliminating this vital resource will create unnecessary hardship for current tenants while compounding the challenges for any new residents.”

Karpman urged developers to reconsider building yet another residential property in a neighborhood she says needs more parking, not housing. “The decision to prioritize profit at the expense of an essential service is short-sighted and inconsiderate of the people who live here,” she argued.

Acknowledging the need for urban development, she proposed finding a less congested location for new residential projects. “There are other areas with more space that wouldn’t result in such harm to the community,” she wrote.

The letter concluded with a heartfelt appeal to preserve the community’s quality of life. “This is not just about convenience—it’s about maintaining quality of life for those who call Parkchester home. Please do not take away our parking.”

Karpman requested a formal response to confirm that her concerns, and those of other residents, are being heard and taken into consideration.

The letter reflects growing tensions in urban areas where the drive for development often clashes with the needs of long-standing residents. Whether the garage’s fate will shift in light of community opposition remains to be seen.
