75-year-old freshman embraces university life as a “culture change”
Bob Lakin, a 75-year-old former truck driver, has embarked on a new journey as a student of philosophy at the University of Winchester. This week marks his first experience in higher education since leaving school 60 years ago, and he describes the transition as a significant “culture change.”
Encouraged by his partner, Mr. Lakin previously completed a course in philosophy at Peter Symonds College. He believes that learning is a lifelong endeavor, stating, “You always want to learn things.” For him, studying philosophy is a way to reflect on and contextualize his life experiences.
Though most of his fellow students are significantly younger, Mr. Lakin feels right at home, expressing that university is “probably where I should have been.” He appreciates the more accepting atmosphere of modern education compared to his own school days, noting that people are less judgmental and more open-minded today.
Chris Higginson, Mr. Lakin’s tutor from college, expressed immense pride in his student, highlighting that it’s never too late to pursue one’s passions and embark on new adventures.
When asked about future plans after earning his degree, Mr. Lakin said he wouldn’t rule out teaching, humorously adding that he’ll still be younger than both Donald Trump and Joe Biden when he graduates. His story serves as an inspiring reminder that education can be a fulfilling pursuit at any age.
