Car crash at UK school leaves one child dead, two in critical condition

A devastating car crash occurred at the private Study Prep girls’ school in southwest London, resulting in the death of an eight-year-old girl and leaving a child and a woman in critical condition. The incident took place on Thursday morning and was determined by the authorities to be unrelated to terrorism.

London’s Metropolitan Police provided an update, stating that the second eight-year-old girl involved in the crash was rushed to the hospital and remains in a life-threatening condition. Additionally, a woman in her 40s is also in critical condition receiving medical care. Several other individuals, including a seven-month-old girl, were taken to the hospital as well, but their injuries were not deemed life-threatening.

Detective Chief Superintendent Clair Kelland expressed sympathy for the families affected, acknowledging the unimaginable pain and distress they must be enduring. The police assured that they would provide comprehensive support while continuing their investigation into the incident.

Emergency services, including the police, ambulance, and fire departments, swiftly responded to the scene located on Camp Road, near Wimbledon Common, shortly before 10:00 am (0900 GMT) on Thursday. Aerial footage displayed a gold-colored Land Rover car, positioned at an angle against the wall of the modern school building.

Authorities disclosed that the driver of the vehicle, a 46-year-old woman from Wimbledon, was apprehended at the crash site and subsequently transported to the hospital. Fortunately, her injuries were assessed as non-life-threatening. She is suspected of causing death by dangerous driving and has been released on bail pending further investigations.

The Study Prep school caters to girls between the ages of four and eleven, with various sites across the area. The Camp Road location, situated near the Royal Wimbledon Golf Club, is designated for the youngest pupils. According to the school’s website, the incident occurred on the last day of the term for children aged four to eight.

In response to the tragic event, the school issued a statement expressing profound shock and extending their deepest condolences to the bereaved family. They also offered their thoughts and support to the families of those injured during this distressing time.
