AFRICA DAY
Dear friends and Africa stakeholders,
New York City, New York (4/25/19) –You are cordially invited to the 12th Africa Day celebration in New York City taking place in the Bronx.
Background:
In 2007, Brooklyn Assemblyman Hakeem Jefferies sponsored a resolution in Albany to recognize May 25 as Africa Day in New York State and went on to host the first official Africa Day celebration in Albany with the presence of diplomatic officials from the African Union Secretariat at the United Nations in New York City. Africans in the diaspora mostly from the tristate area took bus loads to Albany to patriotically participate in this historic moment. Honorable Josheph Makhandal Champagne, Esq, former Mayor of South Toms River, New Jersey, was the keynote speaker on this inaugural event. From thereon, Africa Day is celebrated annually on May 25 in New York in collaboration with diplomats, elected officials, clergy, educators and Africa stakeholders.
Both Africa Day (May/25) and African Union Day (September/9) are officially convened by African Union Day Foundation, in collaboration with African organizations, African diplomats and elected officials in New York City. This year with the Bronx being the home to the largest African immigrants in New York City, Africa Day will be celebrated on Saturday, May 25, 2019 in Co-op City, a hidden Jewel of New York, from 6:00-10:00 PM. The celebration is free and open to the public.
