AU Mourns Trailblazing Ethiopian Diplomat Konjit Sinegiorgis

The African Union Commission has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Ambassador Konjit Sinegiorgis, describing her as a distinguished diplomat and a pioneering force in Africa’s foreign service.
In an official statement, the Chairperson of the Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, paid glowing tribute to the late envoy, noting her decades-long contribution to diplomacy and Pan-African ideals.
Ambassador Sinegiorgis, one of Ethiopia’s earliest female ambassadors, was celebrated for breaking barriers and opening doors for women in diplomacy across the continent. Her career, which spanned several decades, was marked by a strong commitment to advancing Africa’s interests and strengthening international cooperation.
“Ambassador Konjit Sinegiorgis embodied the highest ideals of African diplomacy, marked by integrity, excellence, and an unyielding commitment to our shared future,” Youssouf stated.
He added that “her legacy will continue to inspire generations of African diplomats, particularly women, to serve with courage, distinction, and purpose.”
On behalf of the Commission, the Chairperson extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the late diplomat, as well as to the government and people of Ethiopia, and the wider African community mourning her passing.
