A second-string United States team extended their Davis Cup winning streak by decisively dismantling Germany to secure the top spot in Group C in Zhuhai on Saturday.

Despite the absence of star players like U.S. Open runner-up Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, and Frances Tiafoe, the 32-time winners showcased their formidable strength, advancing to the quarter-finals of the prestigious men’s team competition.

Brandon Nakashima led the charge for the Americans, securing an unassailable 2-0 lead by overpowering Maximilian Marterer with a 6-4, 6-2 victory in the second singles match of the day.

Nakashima’s performance was nothing short of spectacular, marking his third victory in his debut campaign and maintaining a perfect record.

Reflecting on the achievement, Nakashima expressed, “It’s been unbelievable this whole week. It’s special to be part of this team. To represent the country has always been a dream of mine since I started playing tennis, so I’m super happy that I was able to get three wins on the board for the team.”

Earlier in the day, world number 309 Reilly Opelka, making a comeback after hip and wrist surgeries, displayed remarkable tenacity. He saved three match points and unleashed his powerful serve to defeat debutant Henri Squire 6-7(4), 7-6(9), 6-3. Opelka’s grit was instrumental in setting the tone for the team’s success.

With the conclusion of the group stage, the top two countries from each of the four groups, located in different cities, will progress to the Final 8 knockout stage slated for November in Malaga. Alongside the United States and Germany, heavyweights Spain and Australia have also qualified for the next round.

Meanwhile, Belgium is set to face Brazil in Bologna with hopes of advancing from Group A, while the Czech Republic takes on France in Group B, with both teams unable to progress after losing their previous matches in Valencia.

In Manchester, Finland, last year’s surprise semi-finalists, will meet Argentina, needing a win to stay competitive in Group D.
