“Let us not forget who assaulted democracy” — Pelosi reignites debate on January 6th
In a stirring and impassioned address at the Democratic National Convention, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi reignited the national conversation surrounding the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol.
Pelosi, known for her steadfast leadership and unyielding commitment to democratic principles, did not mince words as she placed former President Donald Trump squarely back in the spotlight for his role in the unprecedented assault on American democracy.
“January 6th was a perilous moment for our democracy. Never before had a president of the United States, so brazenly assaulted the bedrock of our democracy. So gleefully embraced political violence, so willfully betrayed his oath of office,” Pelosi declared.
Pelosi’s remarks served as a powerful reminder of the events that transpired on that fateful day, when a mob of Trump’s supporters stormed the Capitol in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 Presidential election.
The insurrection resulted in multiple deaths, injuries, and a profound sense of vulnerability in the nation’s capital.
“Let us not forget who assaulted democracy on January 6th. He did. But let us not forget who saved democracy that day. We did. The Parable of January 6th reminds us that our democracy is only as strong as the courage and commitment of those entrusted with its care,” Pelosi continued, emphasizing the collective effort of lawmakers, law enforcement, and citizens who stood firm in the face of chaos and upheld the democratic process.
With the 2024 elections looming, Pelosi underscored the critical importance of electing leaders dedicated to upholding democratic ideals.
“And we must choose leaders who believe in free and fair elections who respect the peaceful transfer of power. The choice couldn’t be clearer. Those leaders are Vice President Harris and Governor Walls,” she concluded, throwing her unequivocal support behind the Democratic ticket.
Pelosi’s address was met with fervent applause and renewed determination among the attendees, reflecting a shared commitment to safeguarding the principles that underpin American democracy.
