Strong 7.1-magnitude earthquake rocks Japan
A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of Japan’s Kyushu island on Thursday, prompting immediate concerns and a tsunami advisory.
The tremor occurred at 4:42 p.m. local time (3:42 a.m. ET) near Miyazaki Prefecture, at a depth of approximately 18 miles, according to Japan’s meteorological agency.
In response to the seismic event, Japanese authorities quickly advised residents to evacuate coastal areas in both Kochi and Miyazaki prefectures until further notice.
The advisory indicated that while waves were not expected to surpass 1 meter (3.3 feet), safety remains the priority for those living near the shore.
Local news outlet NHK reported that the police chief was assessing potential structural damage from the earthquake, but initial reports indicated there were no significant issues. However, Miyazaki Port did experience a notable surge of 20 inches, marking the largest rise observed so far.
