As the tax filing deadline looms, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announces a nationwide initiative to offer free, in-person tax assistance to taxpayers who have not yet filed their taxes. With an estimated 90 million Americans yet to file, the IRS aims to ease the process by providing face-to-face support on Saturday, before the impending Monday deadline.

Operating from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., 70 Tax Assistance Centers across the nation will extend their services to provide personalized guidance to taxpayers. IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel underscores the agency’s commitment to assisting taxpayers during this critical period, emphasizing the significance of the special Saturday hours in expanding service accessibility.

Funded through the Inflation Reduction Act, these one-day centers will cater to various taxpayer needs, including identity authentication, account adjustments, and payment processing via check or money order. However, it’s important to note that tax return preparation services will not be offered at these centers.

The IRS advises individuals seeking assistance to arrive early, as services will be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis. To utilize the assistance centers, taxpayers must bring essential documentation, including a government-issued ID, a second form of identification, Social Security or individual taxpayer identification numbers for all household members, IRS letters or notices received, and a copy or digital image of their tax return if already filed.

Moreover, the IRS ensures language accessibility by providing an over-the-phone interpretation service for individuals who speak languages other than English. Additionally, in an effort to accommodate taxpayers further, the IRS has extended office hours at many Tax Assistance Centers on Thursday and Tuesday, with an additional Saturday TAC scheduled for May 18.

For taxpayers seeking assistance, locating the nearest Tax Assistance Center is made easy through the IRS TAC office locator tool, ensuring accessibility and support for individuals navigating the complexities of tax filing.
