Mayor Adams unveils ambitious green economy plan for New York City
Mayor Eric Adams of New York City has introduced a comprehensive Green Economy Action Plan with the goal of positioning the city as a leader in sustainable innovation and addressing critical environmental issues.
The plan, revealed in collaboration with New York City Economic Development Corporation President and CEO Andrew Kimball and NYCTalent Executive Director Abby Jo Sigal, outlines a strategy to cultivate a thriving green economy, with a projected creation of nearly 400,000 “green-collar” jobs by 2040.
A key component of this initiative is the launch of a pioneering “Climate Innovation Hub” at the Brooklyn Army Terminal, designed to serve as a hub for nurturing green technology startups and businesses. Mayor Adams expressed, “Our Green Economy Action Plan will leverage the growth of a new industrial revolution, equipping New Yorkers with the resources needed to construct a resilient and prosperous city and excel in our forward-thinking economy.”
The plan not only focuses on job generation but also aims to address climate change by advocating for renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable practices. Deputy Mayor for Operations Meera Joshi emphasized, “Addressing the climate crisis with the necessary urgency not only bolsters our infrastructure but also our economy, offering quality ‘green-collar’ employment opportunities to New Yorkers from various educational backgrounds and experiences.”
From an economic perspective, the plan is anticipated to significantly boost the city’s economy. The Climate Innovation Hub alone is expected to yield a $2.6 billion economic impact and generate 600 jobs over the course of a decade.
Deputy Mayor for Housing, Economic, and Workforce Development Maria Torres-Springer underscored the broader implications of the plan, stating, “The Green Economy Action Plan serves as an integrated talent and economic development strategy for all five boroughs, exemplifying the Adams administration’s efforts to connect New Yorkers with sustainable employment opportunities, fostering inclusive economic growth in rapidly expanding sectors.”
