Thousands of protesters flooded the streets of Los Angeles on Sunday, voicing strong opposition to the Trump administration’s intensified immigration policies. The demonstration, which began at the historic Mexican marketplace, escalated as participants marched onto the 101 Freeway, briefly bringing traffic to a standstill.

Chanting slogans and holding signs denouncing President Donald Trump, demonstrators condemned the administration’s recent measures, including stepped-up deportation operations and tighter border controls. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) issued warnings about road closures and stated on social media that the protest was unauthorized.

Los Angeles, a city where one in three residents is an immigrant, is home to approximately 3.6 million migrants—79% of whom are from Mexico and Central America. The protest underscored growing concerns over the administration’s latest immigration policies, which have sparked outrage across the country.

The backlash follows Trump’s decision on January 20 to remove the CBP One app, a platform that previously allowed migrants to apply for legal entry into the U.S. Just two days later, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was granted expanded authority to arrest undocumented migrants in sensitive locations, including churches, hospitals, and schools.

Trump also celebrated a recent legislative win with the passage of the Laken Riley Act, which empowers border agents to detain migrants involved in crimes without requiring a court order. In another controversial move, the administration has ordered preparations for a detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, capable of holding up to 30,000 migrants.

As Trump’s immigration crackdown intensifies, demonstrations like the one in Los Angeles highlight the growing resistance from communities directly impacted by these policies. The city’s immigrant population continues to push back, demanding protections and a more humane approach to immigration enforcement.
