Subway assault: Woman Anthonia Egegbara sentenced to 12 years for shoving commuter into moving train
Anthonia Egegbara, 32, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison by Manhattan Supreme Court for a brutal assault on a commuter in Times Square.
The incident, which occurred on October 4, 2021, left Lenny Javier, a 42-year-old resident of New Jersey, with severe injuries, including a broken arm that required surgery.
Egegbara’s attack was described as “random,” raising concerns over safety in public transportation hubs. At the time of the assault, she had been out on bail for just three months following a separate assault on another subway rider.

Initially charged with attempted murder, Egegbara faced a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison. However, she ultimately pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of first-degree assault on August 8 as part of a plea deal with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.
The case has drawn attention to the rising concerns over safety in New York City’s transit system, prompting discussions on measures to protect commuters.
As Egegbara begins her lengthy prison sentence, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by those navigating the city’s bustling subway system.
