Gunfire erupted at the Langston Hughes Houses (NYCHA) in Brownsville early this morning, marking the area’s fourth shooting this week. The incident occurred at 315 Sutter Ave., within the jurisdiction of the NYPD 73rd Precinct, which covers Brownsville and Ocean Hill.

Officers responded to the scene at 3:03 a.m. and discovered a 19-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to her right shoulder, and a 35-year-old man shot in the right arm. Both victims were transported by EMS to Brookdale University Hospital, where they were listed in stable condition.

The shooting adds to a troubling trend of violence in the area. Through June 2, the 73rd Precinct has recorded 13 homicides in 2024, more than triple the number at the same point last year. There have also been 24 shootings with 28 victims reported, compared to 16 shootings with 17 victims by this time last year.

Despite the surge in shootings and homicides, overall crime in the 73rd Precinct is down slightly, decreasing by just over 1% compared to the same period in 2023.

The NYPD continues to investigate the latest shooting and is urging anyone with information to come forward. The incident underscores ongoing concerns about gun violence in Brownsville and efforts by law enforcement to address the issue.
