Council member Vanessa Gibson has announced her candidature for the Bronx Borough President in 2021.

Gibson, who represents the Bronx's 16th Council District, made the announcement of her intentions Thursday through a statement.

"These last several months have been especially hard on all of us, but together we will make it through this crisis and emerge healthier and stronger than ever. It’s going to take change and the challenges that will come with it," she said.

"This pandemic has exposed the systemic health disparities that we all knew existed. We cannot allow them to continue, which is why I’m committed to ensuring that every Bronxite has access to high quality, affordable healthcare close to home for years to come."

Gibson said the pandemic has also shown the reality of food insecurity and the lack of access to healthy food options.

"We can no longer have the distinction of being the unhealthiest county in New York State. It’s time to utilize the space we have to create urban agricultural sites, community gardens and expand the use of our Farmer’s Markets and Green Markets that make them accessible to every resident, regardless of income," she said.

Gibson said during her time in the City Council and the New York State Assembly, she has helped to bring thousands of new jobs to the Bronx.

"As Borough President, I’ll fight to bring creative and new opportunities to the Bronx while ensuring that the small businesses that are the fabric of our communities are able to operate, strive and thrive," said Gibson before going on to ask for donations saying, "I know that times are extremely tough, but I need your support to win this election. Can you make a $10, $25, or $50 donation to my campaign to celebrate today’s announcement?

"Due to the city’s matching funds program, your donation will be matched 8 to 1, so no matter the amount you give, you will have an impact on this race. There’s a lot of work to do, but I’m ready to take on the fight that lies ahead. I am thankful for your encouragement and support in advance and look forward to sharing my vision for the future of the Bronx with you over the next few months.

"I know that tough days are ahead but we will get through this as we move #ForwardTogetherBronx.I will never stop fighting for the Bronx!" reads Gibson's statement.
