Bronx Mourns Former U.S. Congressman Eliot Engel, Lauds Decades of Public Service

The Bronx Borough President, Vanessa Gibson, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Congressman Eliot Engel, describing him as a dedicated public servant who served the Bronx and Westchester County with integrity and commitment for over three decades.

In a condolence message, Gibson said the region joins “the Bronx, Westchester County, and the nation in mourning” the loss of the late lawmaker, noting his longstanding impact on public service and community representation.

“For more than three decades, he served with unwavering dedication, representing the Bronx and Westchester County with integrity and a deep commitment to his constituents,” she said.

Gibson highlighted Engel’s legislative contributions during his time in the New York State Assembly and the United States Congress, where he championed key reforms in healthcare, gun control, and other policies aimed at improving public safety and welfare.

“Through his leadership in the New York State Assembly and the United States Congress, he exemplified what it means to be a public servant, championing reforms to health care, gun control, and other policies to keep New Yorkers safe,” she added.

She extended condolences to the late congressman’s family, friends, and associates, praying for strength and comfort during the period of mourning.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences and prayers of strength to his family, loved ones, and all whose lives he touched. May he rest in peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire future generations of leaders,” Gibson said.
