Death struck swiftly in the quiet halls of a Shi’ite paramilitary headquarters in Iraq’s western Anbar province. In a single U.S. airstrike, at least 15 fighters, including the Popular Mobilisation Forces’ (PMF) Anbar operations commander, Saad al-Baiji, were killed, while 30 others were wounded, some critically.

Sources said the strike hit during a security meeting of senior commanders, turning what should have been strategy discussions into a scene of chaos and devastation. The PMF confirmed the loss of their commander and companions, accusing the United States of targeting a command post while personnel were on duty.

“The dead lie where they planned, where they strategized,” said a health official at the scene. The wounded were rushed to hospitals, but the death toll may rise as medics battle against time to save the critically injured.

The PMF, an umbrella of mostly Shi’ite paramilitary groups integrated into Iraq’s state security forces, has been on high alert since Tehran-backed factions escalated attacks on U.S. bases following the February outbreak of the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran. The Anbar strike underscores the deadly reach of these ongoing hostilities and hints at further instability in a region already scarred by decades of conflict.

As missiles and jets continue to redraw lines on the battlefield, lives hang in the balance, and every strike leaves behind not just numbers—but families shattered, and communities haunted by loss.
