Ocasio-Cortez Condemns Trump’s Military Action in Iran, Calls It “Unnecessary and Catastrophic”

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14) has strongly condemned the Trump Administration’s announcement of a major U.S. military operation in Iran, describing it as a deliberate act of aggression that could have been avoided through diplomacy.
In a statement released today, Ocasio-Cortez said, “The American people are once again dragged into a war they did not want by a president who does not care about the long-term consequences of his actions. This war is unlawful. It is unnecessary. And it will be catastrophic.”
She highlighted that critical negotiations between the United States and Iran earlier this week had the potential to prevent conflict. “Just this week, Iran and the United States were negotiating key measures that could have staved off war. The President walked away from these discussions and chose war instead,” she said, referencing President Trump’s remarks acknowledging potential American casualties, adding, “that often happens in war.”
Ocasio-Cortez stressed that the escalation was not inevitable but a conscious choice. “Mr. President: this was not an inevitability. This is a deliberate choice of aggression when diplomacy and security were within reach. Stop lying to the American people,” she stated.
Drawing parallels with past conflicts, the Congresswoman warned of the consequences of military action in the region. “Violence begets violence. We learned this lesson in Iraq. We learned this lesson in Afghanistan. And we are about to learn it again in Iran. Bombs have yet to create enduring democracies in the region and this will be no different,” she said.
She also reaffirmed the constitutional limits of presidential power in declaring war. “In moments of war, our Constitution is unambiguous: Congress authorizes war. The President does not,” Ocasio-Cortez noted.
To assert congressional authority, she pledged her support for the War Powers Resolution introduced by Representatives Ro Khanna and Thomas Massie. “I will do my part to uphold our Constitution by voting YES on Representatives Ro Khanna and Thomas Massie’s War Powers Resolution. Every member of Congress must join us in rejecting this aimless war,” she said.
The statement comes amid growing national debate over the legality and consequences of U.S. military interventions in the Middle East, with many lawmakers and advocacy groups calling for restraint and diplomatic solutions.
Ocasio-Cortez’s statement underscores a broader concern among some members of Congress that unilateral military action without explicit congressional authorization violates constitutional norms and risks unnecessary loss of life.
As tensions continue to mount, Ocasio-Cortez’s comments signal that the House may see vigorous debate over the limits of presidential war powers in the coming days.
