AU Condemns Iran’s Missile, Drone Attacks on Gulf States, Urges Immediate De-escalation

The African Union has strongly condemned the recent missile and drone attacks allegedly carried out by the Islamic Republic of Iran against several Gulf nations, describing the actions as a violation of sovereignty and a threat to regional stability.
In a statement issued on February 28, 2026, from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, denounced the attacks targeting the sovereign territories of Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
Youssouf stated that the actions “constitute a clear violation of sovereignty and territorial integrity and risk further destabilizing the Middle East at a time when restraint is urgently required.”
He emphasized that the African Union Commission stands “in full solidarity with the governments and peoples of the affected states,” while calling for calm and diplomatic engagement.
“The Chairperson calls for immediate de-escalation, maximum restraint by all parties, and a swift return to dialogue and diplomacy as the only viable path toward sustainable peace and regional stability,” the statement read.
Reaffirming the AU’s commitment to peaceful coexistence and international law, Youssouf stressed the importance of resolving disputes through constructive engagement rather than confrontation.
The statement was released by the AU’s Information and Communication Directorate in Addis Ababa.
