German goalkeeper Neuer announces retirement from international football
German legendary goalkeeper Manuel Neuer declared his retirement from international duty on Wednesday, concluding an illustrious career that spanned 124 appearances since 2009.
The 38-year-old Bayern Munich star, renowned for his exceptional skills and leadership, played a pivotal role in Germany’s triumph at the 2014 World Cup, where he earned the coveted Golden Glove award.
“Today marks the end of my career with the German national football team,” Neuer shared on Instagram, reflecting on his momentous journey. “Anyone who knows me knows that I didn’t take this decision lightly. I feel very well physically and, of course, the 2026 World Cup… would also have appealed to me. And yet I came to the decision that now is exactly the right time to end my chapter in the national team.”
The German national soccer federation lauded Neuer as one of the greatest goalkeepers in football history. In a touching statement, they expressed their gratitude: “All words seem too small. But they come from the heart: Thank you, Manu. For your unique, outstanding successes, of course. But especially for your camaraderie, your dedication, your inspiration for fellow players and millions of fans and footballers around the world. You have changed the game of goalkeeping, you have shaped it. Just like this team. Your team. As a back-up. As captain. As a role model. As a world champion. As a friend. We will miss you!”
Neuer’s retirement comes just two days after Germany midfielder Ilkay Gundogan announced his own departure from international soccer, marking a significant transition for the national team. Meanwhile, Neuer’s club, Bayern Munich, is set to kick off their league campaign against Wolfsburg this Sunday, where he will continue to showcase his talents at the club level.
