Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez congratulates Sally Almaklani for winning Congressional Art Competition
Congresswoman Alexander Ocasio-Cortez has congratulated Sally Almaklani for winning the Congressional Art Competition.
In a congratulatory message shared on her Facebook, Ocasio-Cortez remarked, “Congratulations to Sally Almaklani for winning the Congressional Art Competition for the 14th District of New York!”
She added, “We can’t wait to see Sally’s artwork hang in the halls of the Capitol!”
Each year, members of the House of Representatives sponsor a high school arts competition to recognize artistic talent across the country.
Describing Sally’s piece, “My Hijab Makes Me Powerful”, Ocasio-Cortez stated that the piece “contains striking visuals and a counter-narrative on hijab: that as a tool of self-expression, a hijab can empower young women.”
“Sally’s depiction of a radiant young Muslim woman compellingly contrasts Islamophobic stereotypes against the hijab. And, the beautiful aesthetic coupled with the powerful message certainly speaks to our district.
“Sally currently attends Renaissance High School for Musical Theater & the Arts, which has a visual arts program that has supported her work,” she said.
According to the Congresswoman, Sally will also be visiting D.C. later this month along with the other winners to attend the Congressional Art Competition Winners’ Reception.
