Passing of Michael Singletary- the Best of the Bronx
Dr Mark Naison:
I just learned of the passing of Michael Singletary, the creator of this beautiful print that hangs in the dining room of our home in Brooklyn. Michael, a world famous artist whose paintings and prints have been displayed around the world, was among many successful people who grew up in the Patterson Houses in the 1950’s. One of the first big supporters of the Bronx African History Project, it was Michael who introduced me to Allen Jones, with whom I collaborated on “ The Rat That Got Away. A larger than life figure who distinguished himself in basketball before he made a name for himself in the arts, Michael was one of the many great products of the night center at PS 18, run by the legendary Floyd Lane. His passing reminds us of the importance of making sports and the arts an essential component of public education, both during the school day and in after school programs
Michael was a great person, as warm and generous as he was talented. My heart goes out to all who knew him and loved him.Michael Singletary represented the Best of the Bronx
