Billionaire Shinawatra becomes Thailand’s youngest prime minister
Paetongtarn Shinawatra, a 37-year-old billionaire heiress and the daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, has been elected as Thailand’s new prime minister.
Her selection comes after a decisive backing from a majority of lawmakers, following the recent dismissal of Srettha Thaksin due to a cabinet appointment scandal.
Paetongtarn, affectionately known as “Aw Ung Ing,” has made her mark in the political landscape despite having no prior elected office experience. The Pheu Thai party, founded by her father, secured a significant 314 seats in parliament, enabling her to achieve the necessary support from over half of the 493 lawmakers to take the helm of the nation.
Raised in a politically charged environment, Paetongtarn has been actively involved in her family’s business empire, particularly overseeing its hotel operations before venturing into politics three years ago. Her political journey coincided with her pregnancy, showcasing her tenacity as she campaigned passionately during the 2023 elections.
Educated at Chulalongkorn University, one of Thailand’s premier institutions, and having studied international hotel management at the University of Surrey in England, Paetongtarn combines business acumen with a strong commitment to public service. In a candid interview, she expressed her desire to create a livable country for her children, reflecting a shift in her priorities after becoming a mother.
The political legacy of the Shinawatra family looms large over Thailand. Thaksin, removed from power in a coup in 2006, has remained a controversial figure, exerting influence from abroad despite facing corruption charges.
Paetongtarn’s ascension to leadership marks a continuation of her family’s political dynasty, as she steps into the spotlight with hopes of uniting a nation eager for stability and growth.
