Somalia-Somaliland Meeting: OIC lauds initiative

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation has described as a laudable initiative, the summit organized by President of the Republic of Djibouti, Mr. Ismaïl Omar Guelleh, to broker peace between Somalia and Somaliland. 

This was disclosed in a statement issued from the OIC secretariat on Tuesday June 16, 2020. 

OIC commended Guelleh's efforts to broker peace between H.E. Mr. Mohammed Abdullah Faramago, the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, and H.E. Mr. Musa Bihi Abdi, the President of Somaliland.

The summit, which was held between June 14 and 15, 2020 in Djibouti, aimed at resuming talks on the recognition of Somaliland as an independent state. 

The summit has resulted in the agreement between the two sides to form a joint technical committee to prepare for resuming negotiations and following up on outstanding issues.

OIC also commended the role of the Republic of Djibouti in helping the two sides to resume talks as being a valuable contribution to promoting peace in the region.

"The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation commends the initiative taken by H.E. Mr. Ismaïl Omar Guelleh, President of the Republic of Djibouti, to host a consultative summit between H.E. Mr. Mohammed Abdullah Faramago, the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, and H.E. Mr. Musa Bihi Abdi, the President of Somaliland," the statement reads. 

"OIC also commends the role of the Republic of Djibouti in helping the two sides to resume talks as being a valuable contribution to promoting peace in the region," it adds.
