Bushwick, Brooklyn, NY - State Senator Julia Salazar (D-Brooklyn), organized and hosted New York State’s first ever info session on “Green Light NY”, the new law allowing all people in New York State, regardless of immigration status, the right to obtain a driver’s license. The “Green Light NY” law will go into effect on Monday, December 16th, at which point undocumented people will be able to obtain drivers licenses for the first time after more than 20 years of struggle.

The event featured a childcare area for parents with their children, refreshments, a delegation from the Mexican consulate, security from the NYPD Mexican Officers Association, and renowned immigration lawyers and activists such as Yesenia Mata, Cesar Vargas, and Luis Gomez Alfaro. The venue, Latinos Unidos Americanos in Bushwick, was quickly filled to capacity by people coming from as far afield as Long Island and the Bronx.

More than 400 people attended, receiving information booklets from the office of Senator Salazar and the Department of Motor Vehicles. After general remarks from the Senator and the lawyers, an extended question and answer period began as attendees asked their questions about how they could take advantage of the new law.

Yesenia Mata, Dream Action Coalition Political Director, said: “It was a pleasure working with Senator Salazar, her team and other activists and lawyers to inform the community on the green light law. We thank Sen. Salazar’s leadership and are committed to working with her to combat fraud and anti-immigrant sentiment coming from Washington. We will continue updating the community on drivers licenses, their rights, the census because an informed community is a strong community.”

NYPD Officer Carlos Ramos said:  “It's so good to  see so many people welcomed here getting the information and resources that they need in Spanish. It is important for the immigrant community to not live in fear and know they take a higher risk driving without a license. NYC streets will be safer now that everyone has access to a driver's license.”
