Monkeypox: Fear grips Canary Island as British tourist tests positive

A British tourist visiting Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands has been tested positive for monkeypox.

According to a report on Monday May 24, 2022, health chiefs in the holiday island are currently looking into five suspected cases of the virus.

A spokesman for the Canary Islands’ Health Service disclosed this in a statement.

“A suspected case of monkey pox in Fuerteventura corresponds to a British tourist," the statement reads.

The report adds that if confirmed to be positive, the British would be the first to be affected in Spain since its first case, last week.

Spain has currently confirmed 40 cases of monkey pox and 67 prople being treated.
