AOC insists unemployment triggers hikes in NYC crime rates

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, New York congresswoman has blamed the federal government for the recent spikes in crime rates in New York City.

While responding to a question at a virtual town hall meeting about the significant rise in crime, the Congresswoman attributed hikes in crime to the state of many people who failed to fulfill basic responsibilities like paying rents and feeding their family.

AOC denounced the conspiracy theory that the proposed police budget cut is the primary cause of the increased crimes in the city.

“Let me make something super clear for everyone here having this question. The NYPD has not been defunded,” said AOC.

While stating what she believed was the reason behind the rise in crime in New York city, she said, “Do we think this has to do with the fact that there’s record unemployment in the United States right now?”

AOC unequivocally stated that government’s inability to appropriately tackle unemployment and provide adequate and timely stimulus checks for American has been the main trigger for the endless waves of crime in the city.

“Maybe this has to do with the fact that people aren’t paying their rent and are scared to pay their rent and so they go out, and they need to feed their child and they don’t have money,” said the Congresswoman.

“So they feel like they either need to shoplift some bread or go hungry,” she added.

New York Police Department has reported in a statement that there has been significant rise in crime rate in the city especially in various boroughs.

The authorities cited shooting cases recorded last month June which are more than twice the cases recorded same month last year.

Speaking about the increased shooting cases, Dermot Shea, NYPD police commissioner Dermot Shea, said that many innocent lives are in fear and danger of getting killed.

“The sharp increase in shootings and violence in New York puts innocent people at risk and tears at the fabric of life in our city,” said Shea.

AOC has been a staunch supporter of the proposed police budget cut which  Bill de-Blasio,  New York City Mayor has promised to implement by cutting $1bn from the from the police’s $6bn yearly budget.

AOC, who voiced support for the police budget cut, also criticized the $6bn yearly budget saying it has not in any way helped in preventing crime in the city.

In her pejorative remarks on the budget AOC said, “Our $6bn budget has not prevented this uptick in crime.”
